This is a new initiative by International Cat Care to improve cat welfare standards across the world and we are proud to ensure our cats receive the best of care, support and rehoming opportunities throughout their journey with us. This award sits nicely by the side of our Cat Friendly Clinic status which also ensures the veterinary facilities and treatment they receive is as stress free and welfare friendly as possible.
Why Is Radcliffe Animal Centre Different?
Radcliffe Animal Centre holds a unique place within the RSPCA family. It has been the only centre that operates as an independent Trust within the wider RSPCA organisation.
How Did This Happen?
In the early 1970s, the three local RSPCA Branches were faced with a decision about the future of the Radcliffe property. They agreed that Radcliffe should operate separately from the Branch structure, allowing it to focus entirely on the animal welfare work taking place at the site.
In 1973, the property—along with the funds needed to support its initial operations—was formally transferred into an independent Trust specifically created to continue Radcliffe’s work.
Since then, Radcliffe Animal Centre has not been an RSPCA Branch. Instead, it has been an independent Trust working under the RSPCA umbrella. It has always been managed by its own Board of Trustees and funded separately from both the RSPCA National Society and neighbouring Branches. As a result, donations and legacies must be directed specifically to RSPCA Radcliffe Animal Centre in order for the Centre to benefit.
As of January 2026, Radcliffe Animal Centre has taken an important step forward by becoming a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO). This new legal status strengthens the Centre’s governance and allows for the recruitment of additional Trustees, bringing greater diversity, expertise and stability to the Board. The CIO structure offers several long-term operational and administrative benefits, helping to ensure that Radcliffe can continue its vital animal welfare work well into the future and better achieve our mission: to provide care, rehabilitation and rehoming to the animals most in need and to deliver meaningful animal welfare education within our community.
